Akka Maha Devi

INTRODUCTION :

 Akka Mahadevi (1130–1160) was one of the female poets and a famous woman in the Lingayat sect. She has made her famous kannada writings known as Mantrogopya and the Yogangatrividhi. She was praised by famous saints such as Basavanna, Siddharama and Allamaprabhu for her contribution in the kannada literature. She was a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

LIFE:

Akka Mahadevi was born in a small village in Karnataka. Even at a younger age itself, she left her family in order to worship Lord Shiva sincerely. She made her travel to Srisailam, to have the darshan of Lord Mallikarjuna. She met two other poets Allama and Basava and discussed about the spirituality and devotion of Lord Shiva. At the end of her life, she lived in Srisailam and worshipped Lord Shiva permanently until her death.

IMPORTANCE :

She was a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva and says that her mind, body, and soul were belonged to Lord Shiva. She never enjoyed a luxuries life, and was fully concentrated his attention on Lord Shiva, and travelled throughout the region, and sung in praise of Lord Shiva. In recognition of Akka Mahadevi, roads and universities were named after her in Karnataka.

CONCLUSION :

Akka Maha Devi was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and considered him as everything in her life. She says that attachment to Lord Shiva is the permanent one, and attachment to other worldly object doesn’t prove to be worthy. We have to follow her footsteps, and concentrate our entire attention towards Lord Shiva. Let us worship this great divine mother, and let her free us from our sins, and give us a blessed life.
