Dharbha

INTRODUCTION :

Taruppaipul is a kind of holy grass and it was mentioned in ancient history, and it is also called as Dharbha. It can be found in almost all parts of the world, and it is considered as a very holy grass especially among the Hindu Brahmins, who are using it during Vedic rituals. Without this grass, a Hindu Ceremony would never be completed. It forms part and parcel of all the Hindu Religious ceremonies, and its importance was mentioned in ancient Vedas and other Hindu Holy Scriptures.

It is also used in treating various ailments such as blood pressure, stomach pain and head pain. Mainly it reduces mental tensions and worries, and gives relaxation to our mind and body. It is suggested to keep the grass in the puja room and must be worshiped along with other deities. Lord Buddha and several other Hindu Sages were used to place the holy grass inside their seat while performing meditation.

Several legends are associated with this divine grass. Once when Lord Rama was sleeping in the lap of Mata Sita during his exile, Indra’s son Jayanta took the form of crow, and disturbed Mata Sita. Due to that, Lord Rama woke up, and at that time, he didn’t have any weapons in his hand. Hence he invoked the Dharbha grass on Jayanta by chanting some divine mantras.

According to Puranas, when Nara and Narayana were doing meditation in the Naimisaranya forest, Bhakt prahalad approached them and he wrongly thought that they are false sages, and started attacking them through his weapons. The great sages chanted divine mantras and invoked the dharbha grass on to him. Immediately it has turned down into a weapon and started attacking him.

From these two incidents, we can know the greatness of Dharbha. And it is more powerful especially when it is used doing meditation, performing Yagnas, at the time of Upanayanam, during Sandhyavanthanam and Gayatri Japam.

Let us worship the divine grass and be blessed.
