Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule

INTRODUCTION :

Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule (1827–1890) was a social activist, poet and a writer from Maharashtra. He was born in a lower class, and due to that, he fought for eliminating untouchability in the society, and he was against caste discrimination. He also fought for the rights of women and insisted that women must be given equal rights similar to men in all fields. 

He started a school for girls in the year 1848, in Pune and also formed a Samaj  in order to get justice for the lower castes. People from all religions and castes were joined in his association and fought for the upliftment of the neglected people. 

Phule was born in 1827 in a lower class family, whose main occupation was farming activity.  At his younger age itself, he left his studies, and worked as a farmer in agricultural lands. But due to the interference of his relatives, he successfully completed his school education in the year 1847. And he got married with a girl belonging to his own community.

Once he was forbidden from attending a Brahmin friend’s wedding by the high class community people. Due to this incident, he was very much upset, and from then onwards, he began to fight for social justice for his own community people.

He encouraged  remarriage of widows and started a maternity hospital for the benefit of poor girls. He also provided free food to them from the time of their admission till their discharge from the hospital. Though he was against Hindu rituals and Vedas, he was a sincere devotee of Lord Krishna, and offered daily prayers to him.

Phule was a successful businessman, and through his business income, he has constructed free annadan choultries, provided clothes to the poor people and also gave employment to the poor widows in his organization.
