M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI

INTRODUCTION : 

Subbulakshmi (1916–2004) also fondly called by the music lovers as M.S, was a Carnatic Music singer from Madurai. She was the Bharat Ratna Awardee, and also received various other awards for her great contribution in the field of Carnatic Music. She has also performed Musical concerts in foreign countries.
Subbulakshmi was born in the year 1916 in Madurai, into an Orthodox Music family. She learnt Carnatic music at her young age and trained in Carnatic music under the guidance of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.
Subbulakshmi’s first musical performance was made in the Rockfort Temple, Tiruchirappalli. Subbulakshmi also performed Music concerts in the Music Acedemy, Chennai. Through her heart melting music, she received great applause from the public, and after performing a few concerts in famous Musical Sabhas, Subbulakshmi has become a great Carnatic singer. She was married with Kalki Sadasivam, and remained as a dutiful wife till his death. She also sang lot of songs in various Tamil Nadu temples.
M.S. Subbulakshmi also acted in the Tamil film Meera, in which she played the role of the great Krishna Devotee, Bhakta Meera. She was highly praised by Jawaharlal Nehru and by various other political personalities, for her great talents in the Carnatic Music field.
Her Bhaja Govindam song was listened by lot of Vishnu devotees, and it earned a great name and reputation from the Tamil audiences.   She also donated lot of wealth to charitable institutions, and she received lot of honorary degrees from various prestigious Universities. She was a sincere devotee of Kanchi Mahaswamigal and she used to receive blessings from him, before going for musical concerts.
Still now lot of Carnatic singers like Smt.Sudha Raghunathan, Smt.Vidya Subramanian and Selvi.Boomija are performing very well in the Musical concerts, and they are also highly praised by the Music lovers.
