PONMUDIYAR

INTRODUCTION :

Ponmudiyar was a female poet, and she lived during the Sangam period, approximately before 2,000 years, and she lived during the period of the Chera king Irumporai, and she also occupied the court of King Athiyaman, who was well-known for his generosity, and he was a friend of Avvaiyar, a female Tamil poet, and a Shiva devotee.

Ponmudiyar has written portions of texts in Purananuru, and also wrote bhakti poems on Lord Shiva. After meeting Avvaiyar, she has become a great Shiva devotee, and as per the advice given by Avvaiyar, she began to write lot of poems in praise of Shiva.

During her period, she was one of the famous female poets, and she was considered as a pure, pious and a chaste woman, and she can be compared with Mata Vasuki, consort of Thiruvallur, due to her good qualities. She showed the Shiva Bhakti similar to other female Nayanar Saints like Karaikal Ammaiyar, and Mangaiyarkarasiyar. After living a noble life for many years, due to her good karma, she has attained the abode of Lord Shiva, the kailasa.

Some of the verses from her poems are as follows:

Oh! The great Shiva! You are the destroyer of evil, and you are the universal god!

Oh Shiva! The entire universe gets enjoyment by seeing your cosmic dance.

Oh Shiva! You are wearing the holy Rudraksha in your neck, applying the sacred ash on your four head, and looks like a powerful rishi.

By chanting the mantra “OM NAMAH SHIVAYA”, all of our diseases would be healed, and we would become healthier and wealthier in our life.

Oh Shiva! You are removing the fear from the minds of the devotees, and making them to concentrate their attention on “SHIVA BHAKTI”, and helping them to lead a prosperous and a sin free life.

 “OM”
