KUMARA VYASA

INTRODUCTION : 

Kumara Vyasa (15th century AD) is another name of Narayanappa who was a famous Kannada poet. He was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, and he also worshiped Lord Shiva. He has re-written the famous epic Mahabharata in Kannada.  Kumara Vyasa was the title given to him, since his admirers considered him similar to Vedavyasa, and hence, he was came to be known as Kumara Vyasa, also known as the son of Vyasa. 

He lived during the time of the great Shaivite poet Sri Chamarasa who wrote the famous texts mentioning the life history details of Sri Allama Prabhu and other Lingayat Saints. Both of them worked in the court of the king Deva Raya.  Kumara Vyasa's most famous work, the Karnataka Bharata Kathamanjari (Mahabharata in Kannada) received wide recognition amongst the Karnataka people, and he was considered as a prestigious and a celebrated poet during his time. It is believed that Kumara was a blessed poet and he had seen the vision of Lord Krishna, during the time of writing his holy texts. Kumara Vyasa had also written a text in praise of Lord Indra’s divine elephant the holy Airavata.

Kumara Vyasa lived in a village in Karnataka. According to popular legend, Kumara Vyasa used to write his works at the Veeranarayana temple in Gadag. In his memory, a pillar was erected and it is known as Kumara Vyasa's pillar which can be found even today in the Veeranarayana temple.

It is believed that after his death, he was taken to the Indra Loka, by the divine attendants of Lord Indra, and it is believed that he is still living in the Indra Loka, by enjoying all sorts of comforts.
