Sumantra

INTRODUCTION : 

As per Ramayana, Sumantra was the chief minister of King Dasharatha, and also his most favorite person. He was a well-wisher of the Dasharatha family, and participated in all the family functions. He was treated as a family member by Dasharatha, due to his good qualities and kindness. Sumantra is considered as one of the important characters of Ramayana. He also provided sufficient guidance to the king Dasharatha towards administering his kingdom in a proper manner. He has discharged his duties in an efficient and eminent manner. He was a capable person and contains great wisdom, knowledge, courage and boldness. He got good knowledge in Hindu Scriptures and a master in all kinds of arts.

When Rama was banished to the forest for fourteen years, Sumantra took Rama, Lakshman and Sita along with him in the forest. When Rama reached the banks of the river Ganga and took shelter under the ashram of a hermit, it was Sumantra who requested him to return back to Ayodhya. But Rama dismissed his proposal and sent him back. Rama went deeper into the forest along with Lakshmana and Sita.

When Rama returned to Ayodhya after spending fourteen years in the forest, it was Sumantra who arranged for the coronation festival of Rama in a grand manner, and provided feast to large number of people of Ayodhya.

Sumantra was praised by the royal family, the people of Ayodhya as well as the great rishis Vashishtha, Vamdev and Javali.
